Words of Thanks
Hello Friends, We have learnt different topics of English Grammar in Simple and Easy way. such as not only...but also / either...or / neither...nor / Exclamatory Sentences / too...to / so...that etc. and I'm getting so much support from you. Just I request you to keep supporting in future also. Let's learn new important topic. i.e Unless/ If...not.
About Unless/If...not
Unless is used instead of If...not in conditional sentences. A conditional sentence is a type of sentence that indicates a condition. It is also known as Conditional Clause or If Clause. It contains an Independent/Principal/Main Clause and Dependent/Subordinate Clause. If we find 'If...not' in a sentence so we can say it is a complex sentence. If...not means the same as Unless. The order of the clauses doesn't matter with sentences using unless. Both are used as alternative to each other. Unless and If...not are used in Present Tense and Past Tense.
Remember:
➤ Negative If clause:
Formula :
If + S + H.V + not + Verb +....., + S + V + O
Unless + S + H.V. + Verb +...., + S + V + O
Ex. If you do not study hard, you will fail the exam. (Use 'Unless')
Unless you study hard, you will fail the exam.
If we find If...not in a given sentence, Use Unless in the place of 'If...not' because If...not means Unless. Make some changes i.e write main verb/es instead of do/does and write Past Participle instead of did. Write next Main Clause as it is.
Ex. If it doesn't rain tonight, the match will start at 10 o'clock.
Unless it rains tonight, the match will start at 10 o'clock.
➤ Affirmative If clause:
Formula:
If + S + H.V + Verb +....., + S + H.V.+ V + O
Unless + S + H.V. + Verb +.., + S +H.V.+ not + V + O
Formula:
If + S + H.V + Verb +....., + S + H.V. + not + V + O
Ex. If you study hard, you will pass the exam. (Use 'Unless')
Unless you study hard, you will not pass the exam.
If we find only If in a given sentence, Use Unless in the place of 'If' but Unless means except If. Make some changes in main clause i.e remove not if it has or add not if it does not have.
Ex. If it rain tonight, the match will not start at 10 o'clock.
Unless it rains tonight, the match will start at 10 o'clock.
