Simple Present Tense is a verb tense and is the most basic tense with two main uses. We use the Simple Present Tense when an action is happening right now or when it happens regularly. We use main verb to make the Simple Present Tense i.e. V1(Play) or V5 (Plays).
Example:
1) She likes coffee.
2) I feel great!
3) He lives in Mumbai.
The Simple Present Tense is used to tell the Habitual Action.
Example:
1) I play piano every day.
2) Ramesh does exercise every day.
How to form the simple present
In the simple present tense, main verb is used to first person ( I, We, You ) and Verb's s/es form is used to third person (He, She, It)
Example:
First Person Singular: I speak.
Second Person Singular: You speak.
Third Person Singular: He speaks./ She speaks./It speaks.
First Person Plural: We speak.
Second Person Plural: You speak.
Third Person Plural: They speak.
For a few verbs, the third-person singular ends with -es instead of -s. Typically, these are verbs who ends in sh, ch, ss, x, o, z.
Example:
First Person Singular: I push.
Second Person Singular: You push.
Third Person Singular: He pushes. / She pushes. / It pushes.
First Person Plural: We push.
Second Person Plural: You push.
Third Person Plural: They push.
Simple Formula or Structure of the Simple Present Tense
Subject + V1/V5 + Object/Complement
or
Subject + Main Verb/Verb-es + Object
How to make the Simple Present negative
The formula for making a simple present negative is do/does + not + Main Verb. You can also use the contraction don’t or doesn’t instead of do not or does not.
Example:
1) I like coffee.
Negative: I do not like coffee. or I don't like coffee.
2) She goes to school.
Negative: She does not go to school. or She doesn't go to school.
3) They play cricket regularly.
Negative: They do not play cricket regularly. or
They don't play cricket regularly.
How to ask a question
Yes/No type question:
The formula for asking a question in the simple present is Do/Does + Subject + Main Verb + Object.
Example:
Does Mona make a cake?
Do you like ice-cream?
Wh type question:
Wh words to frame a wh type questions are What, When, Where, Why, Who, Which, How, How many, How much, How long, How far etc
Remember: Use helping verb (do/does) after wh-word while making a question.
Example:
1) Mona makes a cake.
Wh-question: What does Mona make?
2) I like ice-cream.
Wh-question: What do I like?
3) P.T. Usha runs very fast.
Wh-question: How does P.T. Usha run?
