Gerunds and Infinitives
Gerunds
(Verb + ing) & Infinitives (to+Verb) sometimes work as Verb Complements.
They may also work as subjects or objects in a sentence.
➤What is Gerund?
A
gerund is verb in its ing (present participle) form that functions like a noun.
Any action verb can be made into a gerund.

Participle
☺ We can add ing
to most Verbs.
Ex. play-playing
cry- crying
bark- barking
☺ Verbs that end
with e, remove the e and add ing
Ex. write- writing
ride- riding
take- taking
☺ Verbs that end
with ie change the ie to y and add ing.
Ex. die- dying
tie- tying
☺ Verbs that end
with consonant and a vowel before it double the last letter and add ing.
Ex. run- running
put- putting
cut- cutting
begin- beginning
➤Gerund Examples:
❶ Gerunds
can appear at the beginning of a sentence. It works like a subject.
Ex. 1) Running
is good for our health.
❷ Gerund can
appear at the end of the sentence. It works like an object.
Ex. 1) He quit
smoking.
➤What is Infinitive?
An infinitive
is a verb form that acts as other parts of speech in a sentence. It is formed
with to + Verb.
Ex. to buy, to
work etc.
Infinitive
Examples:
Infinitives
can be used as an object, as a subject, as an adverb, as an adjective.
As an object:
1. Ramlal
always forgets to eat.
As a subject:
1. To travel
around the world requires a lot of time and money.
As an adverb:
1. You
promised to buy me a diamond ring.
As an adjective.

has the ability to succeed.
You may ask to change the sentences in Infinitive Form or Gerund
Form.
